Recently, I was incredibly fortunate to interview Tami Meyer, the owner and head designer at Love Notions. I asked her a little bit about her sewing story, and what makes Love Notions so special. Read on to find out a little bit more about Tami and her wonderful company:
- Tell us a little bit about yourself/your company. What is your "sewing story?"
My name is Tami Meyer and I am the owner/head designer at Love Notions PDF Patterns, LLC. We are an independent PDF sewing pattern company that loves to create designs for the whole family, but we specialize in making approachable, classic wardrobe staples that are a joy to sew and a joy to wear.
I first learned to sew from my grandmother when I was young. She was (and is) one of those industrious, always-in-motion people and the domestic arts like gardening, canning, sewing, and keeping an organized house were her specialties. Sewing and entrepreneurship have been a special part of our family history - and these interests merged for me after I had my daughter about 17 years ago when I began my first sewing business. This sewing and entrepreneurial direction makes sense for me, because I’ve always been drawn to creative pursuits and I love tackling new projects.
- How did you begin your company? What made you want to start your own business?
Love Notions patterns are now your source for user-friendly, digital sewing patterns that help you create the modern, comfortable clothes that will become your wardrobe staples -- but this successful business is not at all what I envisioned when I started my first sewing company! This company is actually born from the small custom children’s clothing boutique I created when my now 17 year old daughter was still in cloth diapers. First, I made her cloth diapers, then created her coordinating outfits and began to take orders on-line. After a few years, my sewn designs became popular and people began to ask to pay for my self-drafted patterns so they could make them at home too. So I made the leap into offering my original designs in PDF pattern format for the home sewist. This is where Love Notions began.
- What would you like people to know about your company? Who do you design for? What are you passionate about?
At Love Notions, we design garments for the whole family and offer digital PDF patterns in sizing for ladies, kids, and men. My passion is to design user-friendly, digital sewing patterns that help you create the modern, comfortable clothes that will become your wardrobe staples. Whether you are a master sewist or a complete novice, my goal is for you to actually enjoy the entire sewing process from the time you click “download” until the wearer is twirling around in the final fitting. Above all I created the Love Notions brand to be about quality and community. I think our sewing community is one of the best places to be - and the support and positivity there is always encouraging no matter what stage of the sewing process you might be in. Quality patterns with a supportive community are my passion at Love Notions.
- What are you most proud of in regard to your business?
I think I am most proud of the array of accessible sewing pattern designs we have as well as the supportive community we’ve built. We have an amazing Ambassador team, a thorough pattern testing process, and our sewing patterns are loved loyally by a huge range of people -- from beginners to experts. We also have a huge range of support to offer our sewists - from our pattern support group, virtual workshops, our sizing inclusive patterns (which are being updated every month), our thorough blog, and our tutorial-packed youtube channel. I am so proud of the fact that Love Notions is a reliable and trusted place to get sewing patterns that you know will work -- and no matter your skill level or unique body shape we offer genuine support so you’ll end up with a garment you’ll love.
- What are some goals you have for the future? What are you excited about?
I have some very fun new summer garments in design right now - think tiers, maybe some more shirring, and definitely lots of wovens! We also have several patterns in the sizing update process and this sizing improvement gets me really excited.
We are also looking forward to opening up our in-person sewing workshop location for occasional classes. This past year has brought some challenges as far as any in-person pursuits go, but we look forward to interacting even more with our community.
